People Against Chemical Trespass

P.A.C.T.

Where is democracy when we are forced by the state to breathe poisonous pesticides into our lungs?

The California Constitution grants us the right to “pursue and obtain safety”.

But our rights are being ignored –  denied  – by the California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) and an industry-serving unjust state pre-emption law. Toxic pesticide “treatments” sickened hundreds in 2007 and nearly killed a healthy baby in Monterey, and it’s not over. More pesticide treatments county-wide are planned, says the CDFA, for the harmless apple moth and for 20 more doubtful “pests”, whether or not they do any crop damage!

THE REAL PROBLEM here is about who has the power – the right – to decide if hazardous pesticides can be forced on our bodies and lungs — a most basic local issue.  In a democracy decisions must be made by the people affected, not by unelected CDFA bureaucrats with discredited science and a dubious agenda.  That’s why we need to make a local law!

Santa Cruz Local Control, Pesticide and Chemical Trespass Ordinance

This ordinance would ban forced toxic pesticide applications on people, their schools, backyards, parks and neighborhoods. And it would still allow farmers and individuals to apply pesticides on their own farms and private property. We need local control, accountable to us!

WHAT CAN WE DO?

SHOW UP  - at the Santa Cruz City Council hearing at City Hall.  We’ll send you an alert when the time and date are set. Just give us your email by emailing us at PACT.ordinance@gmail.com

WRITE  LETTERS  - see “Talking Points”, sample letters and City Council contact addresses.

An unjust state preemption law says we “locals” can’t interfere  with what the state  wants  to do to  our bodies!  The City Council could vote yes on this ordinance, protect us, assert our rights and say, ‘No! When such a law is harming people, it’s time to change it!’  Every people’s movement  for social justice, from the Abolitionists to the Suffragists to the Civil Rights movement, has had to challenge illegitimate laws to codify their basic rights into law……  or ….. the City Council could capitulate,  thus endorsing  that oppressive preemption law by voting ‘no’.

IT’S UP TO US!  Your letters and overflow crowds will make the difference.
